Description
Redeem the Time is an album by the Canadian soft-rock band Homespun, released on New Born Records in 1978. The album was recorded by Roger Monk at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, Canada; with Jim Woodyard producing. All songs written by band member Paul Wylie.
Featuring Paul Wylie on lead and background vocals, as well as (backup) guitar and lead guitar; Brad Klassen and Dave Hilbich on keyboards; Menno Neufeld on lead guitar and background vocals; and Doug Robertson on bass. Also featuring background vocals provided by Mary Saxton and Nancy Nash; Tom Keenlyside on saxophone; Graham Boyle on drums; as well as contributions from Eddie Patterson, Graham Coleman, Peter Bjerring, and Robby King.
Though one of the mellower New Born entries, there’s something about Homespun’s melodies and arrangements that places them beyond standard radio CCM. Their dreamy light-to-easy rock sound is served over a bed of sax-seasoned soft jazz, garnished with melodic pop sentiment and moving string orchestration. A good reference point might be the airy lilting style of Oden Fong and Mustard Seed Faith. The main man here appears to be Paul Wylie, lead vocalist and composer of all the material. A few memorable electric guitar leads help to bring some emotive crescendos to the tunes. May not immediately connect on first listen, but definite grower appeal I think. Attractive burgundy cover with shiny gold embossed design and lettering. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
Tastefully elegant cover graces this album of soft, jazzy and romantically-orchestrated songs about time and scripture and Christian love. The sound here, borne by a mild, swinging drum kit, organ, piano, guitar and mixed-down, background vocals is blended with an occasional saxophone. Wylie’s lyrics and semi-spoken delivery offer soft but pointed messages to the body of Christ. Several songs here have particular value in that they do not deny the pain of earthly life and yet carry an underlying vision of hope.
(Best cuts: «All We Planned To Be», «Redeem The Time», «James Three».) [Karen Marie Platt, CCM (What’s New), July 1981]
