Hold On

Description

Hold On is the third album by the Canadian singer Connie Scott, released on the Canadian label Image 7 Records in 1987. The album was produced and arranged by Roy Salmond of Salmond & Mulder fame.

“Hold on” is right! For those of you who remember Connie Scott’s debut on Sparrow Records several years ago, this album is going to be a shock. Gone are the pink and white balloons. Also gone are the sugary sweet little Christian ditties. What replaces them is a completely new picture of Connie Scott. Growing up has done wonders for this girl.

Sporting a moody but attractive cover, this record is substantially different, a fact obvious even before a listen. Produced by Roy Salmond (formerly of Salmond and Mulder), ‘Hold On’ boasts a thoroughly modern sound. Well-produced and bordering on techno-pop, ‘Hold On’ finds Scott a niche that till now has been unfilled in Christian music. Much like the soulful sounds of Kim Wilde, the songs rely heavily on keyboard – but not without the power of a couple of guitars charging around.

«Run to the Light» will grab you the first time through. «Don’t Curse the Darkness» demonstrates how radically Scott’s choice of material has changed. There were no lines like this on her last album: “Night has fallen on the planet/ Like a shroud from pole to pole/ The strong begin to stumble/ In the shadows of their soul.” There are also ballads, like «Love Is All That Matters» and «Lost Affections»: creative and moving pieces of work.

Scott has always had a good voice, but what really makes this record spark is the depth of conviction in her voice. Passionate and powerful, Connie Scott delivers the goods. [Devlin Donaldson, CCM, November 1987]
