Description
Salt, Sun and Time is the fifth studio album by the Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bruce Cockburn, released on True North Records in 1974, manufactured and distributed by Columbia Records of Canada. The album was recorded between May and August 1974 by Bill Seddon at Thunder Sound in Toronto, Canada; with Bruce Anthony and Eugene Martynec producing for True North Productions. Mixed by Seddon at Thunder Sound except tracks A2 and A5 mixed by Lee DeCarlo at Manta Sound in Toronto. All songs written by Bruce Cockburn. Featuring the Cockburn classic “All The Diamonds In The World”.
Canadian folksinger/guitarist Bruce Cockburn pretty much exists in a league of his own as a master of both lyric and instrument. By the time of his fifth LP Salt Sun And Time Cockburn’s songwriting gave hint of a spiritual transformation of sorts. Over the years he has written some of the most poetic expressions of the Christian faith («All The Diamonds In The World», «Lord Of The Starfields», «A Life Story», «Can I Go With You»), though to peg these albums as “Jesus music” would be both incorrect and a disservice. His sometimes enigmatic observations about life are always pointed and thought-provoking. The early LPs showcased his exemplary acoustic guitar prowess, bringing a meditative quality to his unique stylings of the simple folk medium, expanding to a fusion of folk and jazz by the time of In The Falling Dark and the double live set Circles In The Stream. Humans stands as a landmark album testifying to personal turmoil as well as a more active political stance – themes that Cockburn would carry through into the ‘80s as his style went more electric. I need not go into much detail here – a glance of any secular press will attest to his critical acclaim. The collector will want the original Canadian issues, all of which have gate-fold covers with deluxe liner sleeves. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
