Description
In This House is an album by the Norwegian gospel group Oslo Gospel Choir, released on the Norwegian label Stageway Records in 1992. Also released in Europe by the Dutch gospel label Spark Music. The album was recorded by Ingar Helgesen – assisted by Peder Boljang, Jan Roberg, and Rudolf Reim – at Nordberg church in Oslo, Norway; with choir conductor Tore W. Aas producing and arranging. Mixed by Ingar Helgesen and Tore W. Aas at HitCompagniet in Oslo.
The choir is backed by a band consisting of Trond Lien on keyboards, Phil Kristianson on organ, Johan Stengård on saxophone, Vidar Kjeldsen on bass, and Anders Viken on drums.
Some UK concerts are long overdue for the choir which has now become one of the most unexpected phenomena in international gospel music. In the meantime, we have this, another impeccably smooth rendition of Scandinavian gospel music recorded live in concert. It features several of the numbers heard on previous albums. Connoisseurs of black gospel might feel the songchoice is predictable (Smallwood’s «In This House», Bazil Meade’s «How I Got Over» and even that most enduring of gospel war horses «Oh Happy Day» while doyen’s of black church might argue that the choir’s sound lacks the scream-up-a-storm steam heat of many a black choir. But such criticisms miss the point. The Oslo’s are popularisers, taking the rich, polyrhythmic textures of black choir music into concert halls used to slader fair. And they do this brilliantly.
