Description
The self-titled, sole album by the Norwegian jazzy gospel-blues group Janne Hagens Gospel Combo was released on Parlophone/EMI Norsk AS in 1996, a Norwegian division of EMI Music. The album was recorded at West Audio with Knut Bøhn producing.
Janne Hagens Gospel Combo is Janne Hagen on vocals, Inge Engelsvold on synthesizer, Tormod Eikill on guitar, Gulleiv Wee on bass, and Børge Fjordheim on drums.
Trivia: The band, which was started by Gulleiv Wee after he had left the Norwegian mainstream pop/rock band The September When, actually finished the recording of a second album that was shelfed by the record company and still remains unreleased.
I might as well confess that I love old-fashioned Gospel music. This Norwegian group takes gospel music to a new level. Imagine gospel standards and hymns with a contemporary laid back jazzy arrangement and you have Janne Hagens Gospel Combo. A warning – don’t get too laid back. As soon as I decided that I had this group pigeonholed, they picked up the tempo and rocked with «Where Do I Go From Here». The highlights of the album are JHGC’s original material which blends in very nicely with the rest of the album. It will be a shame if this fine debut doesn’t find wider distribution in this country.
