My Little Dog China – The Velvis Carnival

Description

The Velvis Carnival is the full-length debut album by the American alternative rock band My Little Dog China, released on Alarma Records in ‎1994, a division of Frontline Music Group, distributed by Diamante Music Group. The album was recorded during Winter 1993-1994 by Chris Colbert of Breakfast with Amy fame at “Griffith’s Basement in Franklin” and at The Salt Mine in Brentwood, Tennessee; with Steve Hindalong of The Choir producing. Mixed at The Salt Mine by Derri Daugherty of The Choir (tracks: 2 to 4, 7, 9, 11, 12) and Chris Colbert (tracks: 1, 5, 6, 8, 10). Digital editing and additional engineering by Dave Hackbarth. All songs written by Kevin Clay, Jason House, and Mike Belfield.

Featuring Kevin Clay on guitar and vocals, Mike Belfield on bass, and Jason House on drums and cymbals, as well as background vocals. Also featuring background vocals by Caryn Colbert with producer Steve Hindalong providing percussion, acoustic guitar, background vocals, as well as piano smashing.

Much that comes out of America’s Christian music underground is derivative and immature by bands hooked on some transitory concept of hipness. But for all that there are bands in the underground who are musical pioneers with the vision of prophets and a determination to break new barriers both lyrical and musical. Such a band are My Little Dog China from Montana. Superficially, their noise-pop/punk fusion resembles a band like Sonic Youth but here you’ll find traces of hardcore, grunge and even the lilting lyricism of the Choir (Steve Hindalong produced this set). Their lyrics bristle with anger, compassion, hope and despair. Will this team be another Veil Of Ashes producing one brilliant album then disappearing or will their songs – several of which savagely attack the lies and consumerism of the rock industry – draw a sufficiently large audience to enable them to give up their day jobs? That paradoxically rests with you the rock consumer. All I can say is that this is a great rock album. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, December 1995]
