…and Now the Mission Continues is the sophomore and final album by the American hip-hop artist M.C. Ge Gee (a.k.a. Genie Rodriguez), released on Frontline Records in 1991. The album was produced by Tim Miner and John Wirtz.
A crash course in rhyming and a minimum of studio time produced M.C. Ge Gee’s ‘I’m for Real‘. Since big bro’s death last October, little sis’s seriousness raised considerably upon realizing she is part of D-Boy‘s legacy, and her new resolve shines through on ‘…and the Mission Continues’.
Amidst the mini-spate of D-Boy tributes among Christian rap and dance artists, she has more right to record a tribute than anyone and does it as a sequel to his «Drop the Mic», «I Caught the Mic». From there, producers Tim Miner and John Wirtz give Gee plenty of room to breathe and develope.
Her natural inclination may be toward harder funk ‘n’ soul. «What Have You Got to Say» and «Dallas Girl», replete with dope loops and scratches from DJ Pierre, never get so tough that they obscure her soft spot of “I wanna have as much fun doing this as you will listening to this” spirit. Actually, her delivery is more potent in swingbeat ditties like «Ge Gee’s Jam» where Miner saddles her up to his background vocals and a kazoo.
She is adept at hard rockin’, too. «Love is the Answer» crossbreeds Lenny Kravitz and Judy Garland (?!); «Soul Sister» collides the Beatles’ «Taxman» bass into James Brown’s holler. It’s a strong danceability that continues into the wah-wah stomp of «Trust», where Sista Gee exhorts church folk to care for the downtrodden.
In this solid effort, a dud like «Hawaiian Style» sticks out as li’l too far. Texturally happening with steel guitar and ricky-ticky rhythm, the ill simile and sappy chorus sink it. She concludes with the comforting, gospel-like anthem «Let There be Light», and so ends an album to unite a broad hop-hop constituency under Ge Gee’s heartening godly presence.
