So Far So Good

Description

So Far So Good is the fourth album by American singer and songwriter Kim Hill, released on Reunion Records in 1994, distributed by Word. Also manufactured and distributed by BMG Music. The album was produced by Wayne Kirkpatrick.

She’s gone country, and she wears it well. Kim Hill’s back on the music scene after a three year break during which she decided to stretch those vocal chords a bit and head in a new direction. Though ‘So Far, So Good’ is clearly a country album and a fine one at that, fans of the first three albums will find solace in hearing once again the uniquely deep and hypnotizing voice that can carry so much power and passion, or drop its intensity to convey the tenderest of emotions.

With super producer Wayne Kirkpatrick at her side (he also wrote or co-wrote six of the 10 cuts on the project), Hill opens the album with the assertive first single that was released to mainstream country radio and video outlets, «Janie’s Gone Fishin’». Next is a surprise as Amy Grant joins Kirkpatrick on the writing duties of the upbeat «Is There Any Love Left» – “You love to do the two-step/ And you love the picture show/ And you love to watch bull riders/ At the local rodeo… But it there any love left for me.” (Amy does country, too!)

There are enough ballads playing to the emotions to cause a flood of tears on this one, not the least of which is the theme of love rediscovered in «Walk Me to the Front Door». Another big hitter with the sentimental crowd (of which I’m a big member) is the uptempo title song – “They were just kids/ First time in love/ Heads in the clouds/ Stars in their eyes/ Between lullabies/ And the cold hard truth/ This must be love/ It feels the way that it should/ We’ve come so far, so good.” People looking for a distinctive Christian message amongst great story songs and relationship ballads will love the album closer «When We’re Home» – a sassy blues-influenced tune that declares “…there’s a day coming when we’ll look up to the sky/ We’ll hear that trumpet blow and we’ll kiss this world goodbye/ When we’re home we’re gonna sing and shout/ When we’re home we’re gonna break those dancing shoes out.”

‘So Far, So Good’ is certainly in the flavor of the new country craze that has swept the nation. But long-time fans of Hill who aren’t opposed to a little steel guitar and fiddle thrown in to a mix of bluesy acoustic tracks and uptempo electric stompers should also enjoy Kim’s return.
