Description
Make It Right is the fourth album by the American singer and songwriter Kenny Marks, released on Dayspring Records in 1987, a division of Word. The album was recorded by JB Baird at Bullet Recording and Stage III in Nashville, Tennessee; and at The Bennett House in Franklin, Tennessee; with Bubba Smith producing. Mixed by JB at Sixteenth Avenue Sound in Nashville.
“It’s a matter of your attitude,” sang Kenny Marks on last year’s ‘Attitude‘ LP “I’ll slide on my shades if you want to be cool… but when it comes to being wise – no compromise!” pretty well sums up the position Kenny takes on his current release, ‘Make It Right’.
«No Compromise» is the springboard from which several of the songs are launched. It’s followed directly by «Stand», which encourages us, via an anthemic chorus, to be available for our brothers and sisters. The title track emphasizes finding the Source of love, and letting the quest for someone to love take care of itself. «Promise Me» and «I’d Do It All Over Again» tackle marital commitment, while «White Dress» deals with handling guilt over parental breakup.
The album’s most disturbing and challenging song is «Say a Prayer for Me Tonight». It’s the story of a young man who sought counseling from Marks after a concert, then took his own life a couple of weeks later. Something to think about next time you casually toss off the phrase, “I’ll pray for you, bro/sis.”
Lest you despair, Kenny’s sense of humor is quite intact. The album’s second side opens with «Bon Appetit», a tongue (and that’s not all)-in-cheek look at a guy who sublimates sinning by pigging out. Compact disc buyers get an extra treat – a concert version of Stonehill’s classic «Good News».
Kenny Marks has developed a compassionate, literate, and humorous voice as a writer. As a singer and performer, he also makes a great leap forward with ‘Make It Right’. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, September 1987]
