Tolvte time

Description

Tolvte time is the sophomore album by the Norwegian progressive pop/rock band Kainos, released on CBS Records in 1980. The album was produced, arranged, and recorded by Andy Kidd at Cross Studio in Kristiansand, Norway. Music written by the band with lyrics by Odd Kjetil Rangnes (tracks A3, A6, B3, and B5), Jo Nesbø (tracks A4, B1, and B4), Karl Brunvoll (track A2), Hilde Bergfjord (track A5), and Andy Kidd (track B2). Cover artwork (a gatefold sleeve) by band member Arne Nøst. (“Cover reprodusert etter malerier av Arne Nøst.”)

Kainos features Karl Brunvoll on bass and lead vocals; Ingunn Kanestrøm and Marit Nøst on vocals; Petter Mortensen on keyboards and vocals; Arne Nøst on saxophone, flute and vocals; Øystein Eikeland on guitar; and Jari Sempill on drums and percussion. (The Finnish drummer Sempill – later a member of The Wesley Brothers – left the band after the recording of the album and was replaced by Ole Tom Torjussen of Envegskjøring.)

This outfit are not to be confused with the London-based gospel funk pioneers. Instead this is a Norwegian prog rock Kainos, and this album was a favourite of mine despite the fact that the language barrier meant I had no idea what they are singing about. Like After The Fire the band were signed mainstream to CBS Records and the one song on here in English («Now That I’ve Found») is pure ATF synth-driven power pop which makes me wonder if they’d checked out their English label mates. This is creative prog with male and female lead vocalists and there are plenty of emotive soundscapes which lean towards jazz. «Tommermann» has a poppy melody and some great flute and another favourite is the bouncy «Reell Frelse» with its anthemic rockier groove. With the combination of pop, rock and jazz influences, this is an album that stretches out its musical boundaries with virtuoso performances and it’s not difficult to see why the mainstream wanted to snap them up in 1980. F.eks. ble Aunt Mary-vokalist Jan Groths første gospel LP Good To Know… innspilt her (med Andy Kidd og Alf Emil Eik som lydteknikere).
