Description

3-D is the third album by the American rock band Jesus Music, released on Organic Records in November 1997, a Pamplin Music label, manufactured and distributed in the US by Pamplin Music Corp. The album was produced by band member Sal Salvador.

This has been out for a little while but largely ignored over here which is a shame because its quirky rock sound is in places slightly reminiscent of the B52s. Certainly the opening cut «3D» draws on similar vocal stylings and leaves me high with expectations but then suddenly it’s jangly guitars and it’s clear that the band haven’t settled on a single band sound on their debut. There are some fine moments! I love the intensity of «At The Movies» and ballad «Cry» is packed with atmosphere. «Rain Or Shine» has some great Hammond and the return of the Byrds style jangly guitar put to effective use. «Happy Face» is B52 again though the predominant style of the album is late ’60s hippie music influences crossed with some edgier ’90s moments. Just for fun, the band include a pile of remixes at the end of the album giving you the listener 16 songs. Great value! One puzzling moment, the decision to include the a cover version of Steppenwolf’s «Born To Be Wild». Here it is spiritualised to encourage abandoned ‘wildness’ for Jesus but all I can see in my mind are motorcycles! Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Apart from that indiscretion (there are some songs that are such classics, they need to be left alone!) Jesus Music’s debut is a strong introduction. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, August 1999]
