Description
Love Big, Us Small is largely a compilation album by the American singer and songwriter Jan Krist, released on Silent Planet Records in 1999. The album features selected tracks from the first two studio albums released by Krist during the 1990s (including four alternate takes of Wing and a Prayer tracks produced by Armand John Petri), as well as four new songs produced by David Miner.

Jan Krist’s music is stripped down acoustic-rock with thoughtful lyrics and an incredible vocal performance. ‘Love Big Us Small’, her fourth release, features four new songs produced by David Miner, four previously unreleased songs, and tracks from her two albums, ‘Decapitated Society‘ and ‘Wing and a Prayer‘, both critically-acclaimed and long out of print.
These days folk music appears to be undergoing a renaissance in the Christian music industry. And one might think that is good news to Jan Krist. But during this industry’s last so-called folk revival, Krist couldn’t catch a break from radio and her two critically acclaimed albums – the stripped-down Decapitated Society (1992) and the somewhat more boisterous Wing and a Prayer (1993) – had the misfortune of being released on a label that went belly up. Still, Krist’s last comeback, Curious (1996), netted her a spot on CCM Magazine’s list of the Top 100 albums of all-time (CCM, July 1998).
Now Krist resurfaces after another three-year absence with a welcome compilation that marries four new songs produced by David Miner (Pierce Pettis, Tonio K) with the best tracks from those aforementioned discs, both long out-of-print. Also included are four alternate takes of Wing and a Prayer tracks produced by Armand John Petri (Sixpence None the Richer).
Krist can be blunt (the new «Song of Absolutes») but also doesn’t mind taking her time to unravel a good yarn («Rain»). «Tarzan Tells All», another of the new tracks, is a slinky, blues-inflected tale that reminds us you don’t need a very big light to realize how much darkness we live in. «Put Her to the Test», one of the older tracks, is a heart-rending story of the struggles of single motherhood that never asks you to feel sorry for its writer. It probably takes an extra measure of faith to be a folk singer, even in these acoustic-driven times, and that resilience and grace never fails to take root in Krist’s writing. [Bruce A.
