Wing and a Prayer

Description

Decapitated Society is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Jan Krist, released on Storyville Records in 1993, a division of R.E.X. Music. The album was produced by Paul Irwin and Jan Krist for gfm Productions. It was creatively the equal of Decapitated Society released the previous year (Billboard Magazine wrote “every song is a gem“), but sadly sold even fewer copies.

On her second national release, Krist crafts another folk-rock based collection of compelling stories. Although “real life songwriter” has become somewhat overused as a means of classifying artists who venture beyond the ordinary or accepted topics of Christian songwriters, Krist certainly fits that description. For example, in «Crying Ice», which finds the subject’s tears freezing on her cheeks, Krist describes a disintegrating relationship like this – “Love is like falling down the stairs … it hesitates, but seldom does it linger,” while in «Daisies in Your Bowl», she marks the passing of a loved one by observing “With your boney frame recoiling from sound and scent and sight/ You held your ground ’til Christmas came and then let go of life…” Some of Krist’s characters find redemption and grace (as we’re familiar with it) and some do not, but Krist’s sympathetic delivery allows the listener to care for and identify with all of them.
