Journeys with Garth Hewitt: Africa

Description

Journeys with Garth Hewitt: Africa is a compilation album by the British singer and songwriter Garth Hewitt, released on Myrrh Records in 1996, a division of Word. It is the second of four installments of the Journeys with Garth Hewitt Series. (Journeys with Garth Hewitt: The Holy Land, Journeys with Garth Hewitt: Asia, and Journeys with Garth Hewitt: Latin America, being the first, the third, and the fourth and final, installments, respectively.)

The musical career of Garth Hewitt has been an amazing journey from British Christian music pioneer through pop star flirtations to his current position of troubadour – one who tells musical stories. This series dips into Hewitt’s huge and impressive back catalogue revealing a man whose music and life are fused together in a unique fashion. Few Christian music artists have walked the talk so powerfully, travelling, watching, helping and speaking out against injustice with music that is powerfully rooted in hope. This album covers Hewitt’s relationship with Africa illustrated through classic songs – «Full Moon Over Mozambique», «Namirembe», «Litany For Africa», «Freedom Tree», «Rainbow Over Kampala», 14 in all. One new song «Isaiah 58» about the children’s village where Garth’s son works brings us up to date. Included in this selection are some of Garth’s tunes that are popular in Africa. The album ends with a couple of classics featuring the Jessy Dixon Singers – «That’s Why We’re Here» and «A Friend Of Mine». There’s also a rare ’70s track «Get Up» which features the slide guitar and harmony vocals of one Bryn Haworth. For an album of material spanning three decades, this hangs together well spiritually and musically. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, February 1997]
