Five Iron Frenzy – Five Iron Frenzy LIVE: Proof that the Youth are Revolting

Description

Five Iron Frenzy LIVE: Proof that the Youth are Revolting is the third – as well as the first live – album by the American ska-influenced alternative rock band Five Iron Frenzy , released on 5 Minute Walk Records. The live album was recorded and mixed by Masaki Liu with Masaki and Frank Tate producing. It was recorded at eleven shows throughout 1998 and 1999, including Cornerstone 1999. The cover artwork was made by Douglas TenNapel.

The album contains a number of cover songs and references to other bands. The band fully covers Tom Jones “It’s Not Unusual” and “Receive Him” by the Christian metal group Vengeance Rising. The introductory track makes a reference to Stryper’s album To Hell with the Devil. “Superpowers” integrates The Cure’s “Close to Me” in the lead, and “One Girl Army” begins with a cover of Europe’s “The Final Countdown”.

Five Iron Frenzy features Reese Roper on lead vocals, Micah Ortega and Sonnie Johnston on guitars, Nathanael “Brad” Dunham on trumpet, Dennis Culp on trombone, Leanor (Jeff the Girl) Ortega on saxophone, Keith Hoerig on bass, and Andrew Verdecchio on drums.

Five Iron’s wacky shows are always a lot of high energy fun. One never knows what to expect – glam rocker Stryper outfits at this last years Cornerstone. Well, finally this energy has somehow captured on CD. Playing songs from all three of their releases plus a few new songs too, these guys attempted to capture a live show and generally succeed. The sound is studio quality. While there was some touch up in the studio, this never loses that live feel. From start to finish, this record is packed with almost 72 minutes of zany humor including a cover of 5IF version of Vengeance Rising’s «Receive Him» to a cover of Las Vegas’ Tom Jones’- «It’s Not Unusual». Hopefully you’ll find your old favorites here.

Five Iron keeps you on edge through their entire set. These guys deliver the goods with almost unmatchable energy and humor. This release is mandatory for fans and a great introduction to 5IF if by some chance you haven’t heard them before. [Shari Lloyd, The Phantom Tollbooth, 1/30/2000]

The insert is a 12 panel fold out poster listing hundreds of additional “performers”. (For those who attended any of the concerts which were recorded to be potentially used as this live album, the band had pieces of paper at their merchandise booth where one could sign up to be registered as a “backup singer.” While the final album used cuts from a variety of shows, all the people who filled out their names were mentioned in a large fold-out booklet that went with the album, listed under the title “backup singers.” In total about 7,000 names were listed.)

Liner Notes

“Revolting” – verb, 1) To renounce allegiance to, the act of revolution. 2) To be extremely offensive or disgusting…

We set out in the summer of ’99 to make our first live record, which you now hold in your hands. Armed with our heavy metal costumes (also Jazzercize and our hick costumes) we set off on our summer tour across the U.S. Our friends in the bands The W’s and The Smiley Kids came too (The Electrics, from Scotland were also on a few of the shows), and together we cause mayhem in venues which ranged from roller skating rinks to humid bug infested music festivals. Saki came as well, to work his miracles, and bless his heart for making the ruckus of our live show listenable, even enjoyable.. We liked his green mullet and miss it now that he got a “respectable” haircut. We recorded the entire tour, about 11 shows. What you have now are the best performances from each night. We also encouraged people to sing along. If they did, we asked them to signup on our “Official Background Vocalist” list, which is why there are about a zillion names on here. If you signed up and can’t find your name, we are sorry, we might have lost the sheet you are on, we are very irresponsible that way. You could keep looking too. Or maybe your handwriting was really bad and Sarah couldn’t read it, she tried her best, so give her a break. Well, you probably are sick of reading this, so enjoy. We’ll see you on the next tour, come say “hi”, or just come be revolting with us. And the next time we come to your town, even though we probably won’t be recording a live album, don’t let that discourage you from singing along REALLY LOUD! Thanks.

Producer’s notes: I was really excited when I was given the task of recording this live album . Five Iron Frenzy has been one of my favorite bands since I first started working with them 3 years ago. Their live show is one of the most fun-filled , energetic shows that I have ever seen. We recorded 11 shows and faced various trials at each show. We tried as best as possible to keep a consistent sound while preserving the integrity of the original performance. Due to the nature of live recording, and the variables, we cleaned up some of the mistakes in the studio. We also left some of those in for your enjoyment. I hope you have as much fun listening to this as we did making it… take care… Saki – June 17, Canton, OH – Alive Fest – June 19, Stone Mountain, GA – Atlanta Fest – June 21, Chattanooga, TN – June 25, Mt.
