Description
This Side of Eternity is an album by the American psychedelic rock combo First Revelation, released on Revelation Records in 1973. The album was recorded by band member Danny Kimer at Revelation Studio in Northport, New York.
Featuring Danny Kimer on guitar and banjo, Lynda Kimer on organ, synthesizer, and keyboard bass, and John Hauser on drums. Violin on track A1 provided by Leon Cooke.
First Revelation is the Long Island duo of Danny and Lynda Kimer, together with drummer John Hauser. This Side Of Eternity is actually their second LP, following their excellent homemade rock/psych LP Gospel under the name Danny & Lynda. This custom album is just as good, perhaps even more consistent than their debut. Danny’s guitar is in top form: fuzz and wah-wah reign freely on «Where Could I Go» which features a strong contender for guitar solo of the century. Just try and resist the urge to break into air guitar acrobatics! More growling distorted electric licks can be found scurrying out-of-control on «As Long As You Listen», «New Jerusalem» and the doo-woop-ish «Lord, Come Into My Life». The title track is a nice quiet piece (with violin accompaniment), as are «All My Trials», «Jesus Loves Me», and «Amazing Grace». For «Lord’s Last Supper» and «Swing Low Sweet Chariot» Danny pulls out a banjo and gets down into some mean bluegrass (Lynda’s novelty synths on the latter are hilarious). Guitar heroes are a rarity in this game – what a pity more people haven’t discovered Danny Kimer. [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
This Side of Eternity, Second Version
For their next project the Kimers upped their budget, picked up a new drummer, and in an unusual move re-recorded the entire This Side Of Eternity album, re-interpreting almost every song. In the process an already excellent album becomes even better, although they’re so different collectors will want to track down both versions. If you like your music more on the raw unprocessed side then you’ll probably prefer the first version, since Linda’s synthesizers are laid down a bit stronger here. The electric guitar solos are completely different, but still just as chaotic, growling even louder than on the first version. The two bluegrass numbers appear to be unchanged. The cover art and catalog numbers are identical, with only the drummer’s name to distinguish the original harder-to-find version (drums – John Hauser) from the second version (drums – Bob Argiro).
