Home Again

Description

Home Again is the third studio album by the American singer, songwriter, and guitarist David Wilcox, released on A&M Records in 1991. The album was produced by Ben Wisch.

Listening to David Wilcox, more than Mark Heard, more Pierce Pettis, more than Marc Cohn (who does a pretty good Bruce Hornsby, as well), one is likely to think of James Taylor, even more then you’re reminded of Pettis and Heard. The trick here, and with lots of the great new, acoustic-rooted, folk/pop that’s been showing up is to keep listening. After a while the voice of David Wilcox, the guy who first appeared on the American/A&M effort, How Did You Find Me Here, surfaces and it’s a joy to hear. Well, you’ll still hear a lot of influence of the elder James, if you listened to him as often as I have in the past (thanks Jeff for insisting I not just listen to electric guitars), but what’re you going to do?

More than most in this column, Wilcox expresses a world view that is very compatible to Christian spirituality, if not one in the same. So much so, that I could easily recommend Home Again to Randy Stonehill fans who loved Return to Paradise, but aren’t likely to dig the noise our Uncle Rand is reportedly stirring up for his next record with producer Terry Taylor. Wilcox even has his own “turning thirty” song, «Top of the Roller Coaster», a more contemporary take on the tobacco industry, «Advertising Man», and numerous songs about life and love’s important moments, often expressed in the most reflective terms.

Easy listening, in the best of all possible meanings, David Wilcox, like his comrads in arms – John Gorka, Pettis, etc., are making thoughtful, memorable acoustic folk, just like two decades ago, only the words and emotions are current. I just can’t escape this feeling that “deep greens and blues” are the colors David Wilcox would choose. [Brian Q. Newcomb, Harvest Rock Syndicate, Volume 6, Issue 5, 1991]
