Description
You Are There is a live album by the American singer and songwriter Ashley Cleveland, released on Cadence Records in 1998 in co-operation with 204 Records, distributed by Warner/Elektra/Atlantic Corporation. The album was produced by Kenny Greenberg.
Hand her an acoustic guitar and let her sing along with those distinctive, gutsy pipes, and you’ve got yourself a respectable concert experience. Back her up with her band and it’s an arena rock event. Either way, you’re in for an unparalleled show worth hearing. This disc offers Ashley Cleveland and her hearty songs of faith, family, and love in both settings, singing her soul out solo and with her smoking band. Her husband, Kenny “monster guitar player” Greenburg, wails on electric and National guitars, and Phil Madeira guests on Hammond B-3, while the solid rhythm section of Michael Rhodes on bass and Chad Cromwell on drums drives everything along admirably. Plus there are special guests and some great new material amidst the live standards. About the only improvement you could make to this mix is the inclusion of a blistering, red-hot live version of «Better You Get Ready». But the jamming action of «He Is» and «You Are There», as well as the cover of Rolling Stone’s «Gimme Shelter», nearly suffice. Among woman blues rock players, Ashley Cleveland is both peerless and near perfection. [Steven S. Baldwin, The Phantom Tollbooth, 7/6/99]
CCM rocker Ashley Cleveland brought home a much-deserved Grammy Award for her work on You Are There. This recording offers a number of live songs, many from a mid-’90s tour she did with well-known singer Amy Grant. Cleveland’s talented husband, Kenny Greenberg, stepped in as producer on this album, as well as lending a lot of guitar work where needed. Fans will find that the style of music here can travel from a folkish feel to sure-enough rock. The lyrics and their meanings keep the songs set to gospel. Cleveland has a strong voice – kind of a smoky club voice that would fit well in a classic black-and-white movie with a woman propped on a piano crooning about some love who got away. You can’t miss her singing strength on a cappella numbers like «Soon and Very Soon». A few other songs on this album are «Your Saving Grace», «Revive Us Again», «You Don’t Have to Take This from Me», and «He Is». This is one that Christian rock fans will want to add to their keeper shelves. [Charlotte Dillon, AMG]
