Description
Light Eternal, sub-titled A Choral Celebration, is the seventh solo album by the American singer and songwriter John Michael Talbot of Mason Proffit fame, released on Birdwing Records in August 1982, a division of Sparrow Records. The album was arranged and orchestrated by Phil Perkins and produced by Billy Ray Hearn assisted by Perkins. All song written by John Michael Talbot and Phil Perkins, except track B1 co-written by Talbot, Perkins, and Lee Holdridge.
Over the last seven years John Michael Talbot has produced a substantial body of recorded work that has managed to reflect a diversity of concepts and styles, while remaining true to his singular vision of a modern, neo-classic form of worship music. What’s particularly noteworthy about these albums is that each bears the highly individual stamp that clearly identifies it as Talbot’s own, despite the differences in sound and approach.
The new album is ‘Light Eternal’ (Birdwing BWR-2035), a choral celebration that is closest to his contemporary liturgy ‘The Lord’s Supper‘, though this project was executed on a much larger scale with two choirs and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of London to give it life.
Lyrically the record is similar to the first section of Handel’s Messiah, directly or indirectly quoting many scriptural passages to tell the story of the Incarnation of God through Jesus Christ. The music, written by Talbot and Phil Perkins (who also wrote the choral arrangements and co-produced) never fails to be less than an appropriate and stirring vehicle for this ambitious worship experience. ‘Light Eternal’ just may be John Michael Talbot’s masterpiece. It was produced with love and care by Billy Ray Hearn. [Thom Granger, CCM, October 1982]
