Description
Sing Out My Soul is the debut album by the Swedish psychedelic rock band New Creation, released on the Swedish gospel label Hemmets Härold in 1969. The album was produced by Bo Winberg.
New Creation was among the first Christian rock groups in Sweden, and was led by singer/songwriter and guitarist Per-Olof “Pelle” Karlsson (who also worked with, and later married, the Norwegian-American gospel singer Evie Tornquist). Also featuring keyboardist Lennart Sjöholm (a founding member of the Swedish mid-’60s garage rock group Christallen, later to become a well-known producer and arranger, producing Swedish artists like Salt, Licence, Ingmar Johansson, Roland Utbult, and Carola, as well as Evie and Sheila Walsh), and a rhythm section consisting of Dan Ekström on bass and Anders “Putte” Kjellberg on drums (Kjellberg, working as a professional drummer since 1973, would later join the Swedish blues rock band Vatten, among others).
Obscure Swedish Xian psych produced by Bo Winberg of ASOKA-fame. Anders Kjellberg later joined forces with Vatten and Mount Everest among others. The album contains some nice dreamlike organ-parts mixed with gospel. The real highlight here is the track «He Is There», which with its repetitive rhytm, haunting choirs, fuzz-solo and moaning organ, by far is the most psychedelic track ever to emerge on the label.
Just might have to hand out the ol’ 5-star rating to this irresistible Swedish custom LP. It’s certainly the most exciting thing I’ve heard from those parts. Though much of the album is remakes of things like «Oh Happy Day», «Calvary» (to the tune of «Yesterday»), and «Amen», it’s the psych, go-go, lounge, and beat interpretations these four guys apply that elevate it to the coveted “monster” status. Plastered throughout with what sounds like a ballpark organ giving mood to the softly crooned ballads and setting the bouncy numbers on fire and delivering some incredible surging solos. «He Is There» gets served up with some stinging fuzz guitar. «I Recommend» is a go-go masterpiece that’ll get you up out of your chair, as will the swingin’ covers of «I Met Him In Church» and «Amen» (for their interpretation of the latter imagine the ‘Tequila’ rhythm slowed down a little). «I Surrender All» closes the set bringing back the fuzz plus some spastic bursts of wah-wah guitar for what’s got to be the most powerful rendition of this classic hymn ever recorded. Special thanks to Bob Felberg for introducing me to this classic. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
