Description
Christmas is the seventeenth studio album by the Canadian singer, songwriter, and guitarist Bruce Cockburn, released on True North Records in November 1993, distributed by Columbia Records outside of Canada. As well distributed by Myrrh Records in the CCM market. The album was produced by Bruce Cockburn.
Though Bruce Cockburn has composed a couple of tunes based on the Christmas story over the course of his 20-year-plus career, this is his first complete Christmas album, and it’s a peach. Most of it centers around classic carols, but Cockburn’s versions have a ring of authenticity while being faithful to his own musical approach. This is accomplished through the use of native languages and early arrangements more authentic to the spirit of certain pieces. As we’ve come to expect from Cockburn, levels of performance and musicianship are uniformly high, with veteran sideman Hugh Marsh returning to play some tasteful violin parts, and friend/producer T Bone Burnett and artist/wife Sam Phillips joining in at appropriate times. Cockburn contributes one new song of his own («Shepherds»), but I must admit, it hasn’t caught on with me yet as strongly as did «Cry of a Tiny Baby», from his last album. A complete, and edifying pleasure. [Thom Granger, CCM, October 1993]
