Lament

Description

Lament is the final studio album by the American hard rock outfit Resurrection Band, independently released on the band’s own label Grrr Records in 1995, in co-operation with R.E.X. Music. The album was engineered by Brian “Full Slab” Garcia, Ed Bialach, and Roger Heiss with Ty Tabor of King’s X fame producing.

The latest in a long string of releases from Resurrection Band, formerly known simply as “Rez,” finds the band going the way of a concept album. Lament, produced by Ty Tabor of King’s X, is the story of a young man’s journey through life. «Parting Glance», the album’s brief opener, finds the man leaving behind his home and his family as he strikes out on his own in a desperate search for answers and meaning. The songs that follow trace the prodigal’s journey through elation («Across These Fields»), loneliness («Summerthrow»), despair («Mirror»), and finally peace, as he comes to terms with God’s love («Surprised»).

Penned mostly by lead vocalist Glenn Kaiser, the songs are often appropriately dark, moody and rough. The music is less aggressive than some of the band’s past work, particularly 1991’s Civil Rites, which was a solid hard-rock effort. The vocals are typical of Rez – raw, gritty, unpolished.

Overall, the album is a bit disappointing. Considering the talent involved, particularly that of Tabor, the music often sounds somewhat bland and dated. It may have fit well with other albums being produced 10 years ago, but it seems out of touch with the significant changes that have taken place in rock music in the last decade. Also, the lyrics are at times predictable and unoriginal, as in «Richest One».

Long-time fans of Resurrection Band may find this to be a satisfactory addition to their collection, but it is doubtful that Lament will earn many new fans. [Michael Ciani, CCM, September 1995]

A God-breathed ministry, a concept album and their best album for years to boot! Once again the Resurrection Band, or Rez to those who can’t be bothered to say the full name, have produced the goods again with excellent results. The tracks that stand out are track 13, «Richest One», which has a hint of Clapton’s «Knocking On Heaven’s Door» running through it. Track nine, «Dark Carnival», a beautiful ballad track which has a sparkle of Marillon floating around. In the heavier side we have «On The Move», a gutsy track with powerful track riffs and heavy drum beats which will go down well with fans of heavy rock. If you don’t like music like that then wear your ear plugs… This is a must for all Rez fans and I am sure that they will not be expressing grief (definition of lament) when they play this without their ear plugs… [Edward Scott, Cross Rhythms, December 1995]
