Good to Know… Where You’re Going

Description

Good to Know… Where You’re Going is the solo debut album by the Norwegian singer and songwriter Jan Groth (February 25, 1946 – August 27, 2014), independently released on the Norwegian gospel label Cross Music in 1980. The album was recorded by Andy Kidd assisted by Alf Emil Eik at Cross Studio in Kristiansand, Norway; with Svein Gundersen producing. Arranged by Gundersen and Jan Groth except strings arranged and conducted by Gundersen. Good to Know… was voted Album of the Year in the Readers Awards of the Norwegian gospel magazine Treff.

Featuring well-known Norwegian session players like keyboardist Geir Langslet of Lava fame, guitarist Bjørn Christiansen and bassist Svein Gundersen (who both were members of Aunt Mary, a Norwegian hard rock band that in the early seventies actually featured Jan Groth as the lead singer), as well as drummer Bruce Rasmussen. Backing vocals provided by Alex (Aleksandra N. Sandøy), Svein Gundersen, and Jan Groth.

Jan Groth’s first recording was a double-sided vinyl single released in 1964 (which received a raw review in the American rock magazine Ugly-Things), and a couple of more singles were released in the following years. From 1969-1972 Groth was the lead singer and keyboardist (Hammond B3) in the Norwegian hard rock/prog rock band Aunt Mary (who during 1969-1973 released three studio albums in the European music market on labels like Polydor, Philips and Vertigo, and toured with well known rock bands like Ten Years After and Deep Purple), but left the band before their second album to focus on contemporary music with a Christian message. In the 1980s Groth toured with his friend Larry Norman as well as Tore W. Aas of Oslo Gospel Choir fame. (Jan Groth also worked as a songwriter, and actually co-wrote “Your Love” featured on Andrae Crouch‘s 1997-release Pray.) Trivia: Stephan Groth, the mastermind of the band Apoptygma Berzerk, is son of Jan Groth.
