Brent Jones and The TP Mobb – Self-titled album

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American contemporary gospel combo Brent Jones and the T.P. Mobb was independently released on Holy Roller Entertainment in 1999, manufactured and distributed by MCG Records through Navarre Corporation. Also distributed by Diamante Music Group. Re-issued by EMI Gospel the following year, distributed in the US by Chordant Distribution Group.

This is classy R&B with a smooth production and enough edge to make Brent Jones stand out from the crowd. From the punchy funk of «I Can’t Handle It By Myself» to the passionate sweet soul ballad «Pray», this is quality all the way! There’s an excellent diversity here which keeps the whole project sounding fresh and yet some elements contribute to the trademark Jones sound – sweet, tight vocals. Whether that’s on the gospelly «Rough Edges» or the street sound of «Money Ain’t Everything», the vocals shine through. As for standouts, the personification of sin in «Sindy» is very powerful, the slow brooding funk of «Crazy» and the devotional «Much Love For You» both do it for me. If you already like bands like Anointed and Winans Phase 2, you need to add Brent Jones to your list. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, June 2000]
