Downpour – The Real Me

Description

The Real Me is the sole album by the American modern rock band Downpour, released on Rustproof Records in 2000, distributed by Diamante Music Group. The album was recorded and mixed by Jim McCaslin, Julian Kindred, and Michael Quinlan at Earful Sound in Brentwood, Tennessee; with Quinlan producing (except the hidden track “Take My Life” which was recorded and mixed by Derric West).

Downpour features Brannon Hancock, formerly of Plaid, and Steve Busch.

Plaid got together during my sophomore year of high school. The original line up included me (vocals and guitar), Jason Payton (drums), Allen Salmon (guitar) and Andrew Adams (bass). After being together for two years, we signed a recording contract with Rustproof Records. We recorded the ‘Understanding God‘ album with producers Mike Quinlan and Derri Daugherty. Within months of the release of ‘Understanding God’ we decided to add Steve Busch to the group as a keyboardist. So for the vast majority of the time that we toured that album, this was Plaid’s line up. But as we got nearer to recording a second album, Steve and I were collaborating on most of the music and lyrics, and were writing songs on our own. We also wanted to move in a direction that involved us both singing and ‘fronting’ the band. So we began to work on the Downpour project with producer Michael Q and things just began to move in that direction. We realized that Downpour was a brand new, exciting thing. Downpour is currently me on vocals and guitars and Steve Busch, vocals and keyboards. – Brannon Hancock [Excerpt from an interview featured in Cross Rhythms Magazine #57, June 2000]

This band were planning to play the Cross Rhythms Festival but had to pull out at the last minute. Great shame. As Plaid they released a stonking album and now with the name change, their music and ministry has kicked into a whole new level. Modern rock is their musical bag, but lyrically the band pen songs that are vulnerable and broken, filled with hope and ministering straight into the heart. Powerful stuff! Whether it’s the angst of the struggle against sin in «Lesson In Failing» or the snapshot of eternity painted in «Paradise» or even the simple exhortation of the pop rock opener «Believe», Downpour connect. Whether they’re blending acoustic and electric sounds with loops and stacked vocals on «Hiding Place» or indulging in the soulful vocal honesty of «Hold On», this is a musically satisfying album. There are touches of dc Talk here and there but we’ll forgive them that! There’s a lot of US Christian rock around but this is top quality. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, August 2000]
