Description
The Outsiders is the third major label album by the American alternative rock band NEEDTOBREATHE, released on Atlantic Records in 2009, a Warner Music Group Company. The album was recorded at Black Dog Sound in Atlanta, Georgia; at Plyrz Studios in Santa Clarita, California; and at Plantation Studios (the home studios of Needtobreathe) in Charleston, South Carolina; and was produced by Jim Scott (tracks 1, 5, 8, 9, and 14), Rick Beato (tracks 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7), and John Alagia (tracks 10, 11, and 12), with the band co-producing most tracks (tracks 1 to 9 to 12, 14). Engineered by Jim Scott and Kevin Dean (tracks 1, 5, 8, 9, and 14); Rick Beato and Ken Lanyon (tracks 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7); Brian Scheuble (tracks 10, 11, and 12); and Seth Bolt (tracks 1 to 9 to 12, 14). Mixed by Jim Scott, except tracks 9 and 12 mixed by John Alagia and track 5 mixed by Seth Bolt. All tracks written by the Rinehart brothers.
NEEDTOBREATHE features Bear Rinehart, Bo Rinehart, Seth Bolt, and Joe Stillwell. Scotty Wilbanks is featured on piano and organ (tracks 2 and 4). Vocals provided by Cassandra Williams and Sandra Benser on track 5, and by Sara Watkins on track 8.
Opening with the anthemic title track, South Carolina’s Rinehart brothers and their band have produced a collection of songs that are likely to excite staunch Southern rock followers plus gain them a whole host of new fans. This is mature, well produced rock that continues to build on the band’s previous two releases. Harmonica and piano blend seamlessly with a background of roots rock, perfectly complementing Bear Rinehart’s hauntingly distinctive vocals. There are no weak links in what is a varied and exciting listen. There are stadium rock tracks such as «Prisoner», which would not sound out of place on a Kings Of Leon set list, along with quieter love songs full of emotional phrasing and honest lyrics. However, my favourite, «Girl Named Tennessee», has been constantly on repeat on our stereo and is full of fun with its honky-tonk piano, off beat clapping, hoots and yelps. Fans of Third Day will recognise some rock influences, but Needtobreathe are no copycat outfit. In ‘The Outsiders’ they have crafted an excellent collection of tracks that wrestle with issues of faith and doubt in an honest and accessible way. [Ian Webber, Cross Rhythms, January 2010]
