Something’s Going On Here [7-inch single]

Something’s Going On Here is a two-sided 7-inch single recorded by the American synth-rock artist Body and Soul (a.k.a. Rob Watson of Daniel Amos fame), independently released on Parbar Music in November 1983. (Parbar Music also released the self-titled and sole full-length album by Tamarack, a band featuring Rob Watson, John Patitucci and Dave Spurr among others.) Body and Soul was Rob Watson’s one-man band project in the mid-’80s that recorded an album’s worth of material which unfortunately never surfaced, except for this rare vinyl single.

The track on the A-side features Rob Watson on vocals and keyboards, Greg Flesch of Daniel Amos on guitar, and Dave Spurr on drums, while the track on the flip-side features Watson and Flesch only.

“Graylands” [“This really happened to me in the late 1970’s – three visions about seeking God.” – Rob Watson] was later reworked and released on the compilation No Sense of History. A third track by Body and Soul called “Locked Away” was released on another compilation entitled Shirley, Goodness and Misery. These two compilations were released simultaneously as a 2CD set by Alternative/Stunt Records in 1992.

Body and Soul is Rob Watson’s other band. The keyboardist of the now-infamous DA backed up Sheila Walsh last summer with his outfit, and this single has been available at DA’s merchandise table at live performances for a few years now. It’s worth looking up, and Watson has recorded a demo with Body and Soul that may be available as an indie if the majors let it slip by. [Brian Quincy Newcomb, CCM, April 1987]

I always intended to complete an album, but I wanted to do it differently. I wanted to release a set of seven inch singles starting with that first single, releasing two songs every couple of months until five or six were finished. Around the time I recorded that single, I started touring with DA in earnest. I was also working as a studio musician as well as touring with Petra, the Sheila Walsh Band, Tonio K., and The Surfaris, and got crazy busy, so I shelved that idea and started to record a more conventional album in between tours. – Rob Watson
