Ron Salsbury & The J.C. Power Outlet

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American rock band Ron Salsbury & The J.C. Power Outlet was released on Myrrh Records in 1972, a division of Word. The album was engineered by Paul Elmore with Billy Ray Hearn producing. All songs were written by Ron Salsbury (February 8, 1950 – July 31, 2016) except “Satisfied”, a song written by Andraé Crouch and originally recorded on his 1972-abum, Soulfully. Featuring David Edwards on harmonica.

“Boy, that really sounds flat!” said my roommate at the raw unpolished high-energy rock-n-roll-for-Jesus emanating from my car stereo. But hey – that’s what made bands like this so lovable. This four man outfit’s debut was definitely the rowdiest offering from the early Myrrh gang, with fast-pounding drums, chooka chooka rhythm guitar, in-your-face lyrics, blitzing hard rock electric guitar solos. How’s this for a song ending: “W000!” (guitar/drum crash) “Yeah!” (another crash) “Hallay!” (and another) “Lujah!” (another) “yeaaaaaahhh!!!” (frenzied climax). That’s from the opening «Suddenly», where images of shaggy-haired Jesus freaks with big ol’ gooney grins are immediately conjured. «Long Time Comin» and «Don’t Shine It On» also both cook some serious garage-band bacon, as does their intense version of Andrae Crouch’s «Satisfied». Sandwiched between these monsters are gentle acoustic tunes («Back Home», «Real Peace») and some fine rural folk-rock ala Love Song/The Way («Nick Of Time», «Denominations») – consider them opportunities to catch your breath. Not entirely consistent, especially a couple soft loungy tracks, one of which has a trombone lead. But that rock stuff’ – it totally blew my bag of donuts away.
