Description
The self-titled debut album by the Nigerian-French singer and songwriter Asa (Bukola Elemide) was released on Naive Records in 2007.
This delicious new Nigerian singer/songwriter has created a considerable buzz, and rightly so. Her voice is a delight, at times vaguely resembling Corinne Bailey Rae though there are several African singers who have also clearly been an influence. Asa’s acoustic guitar is cleverly integrated with deft understated programming by Cobhams Asuquo while her lyrics, though seldom making direct spiritual points, have a warmth and love of humanity which is as sunny as a day in Lagos. With lyrics often focusing in on peace and tolerance, this is engaging, deftly executed music which hopefully will be heard on our radios throughout the summer.
