Night Light is the seventh studio album by the American vocal trio 2nd Chapter of Acts, released on Live Oak Records in 1985, distributed by Word. Also manufactured and distributed by A&M Records. The album was recorded by Buck Herring and Wally Duguid at Easter Song Studio in Garden Valley, Texas; with Herring producing. Mixed by Buck Herring and Greg Hunt at Garden Valley. (Mixed to digital and digitally mastered.) Vocal arrangements by 2nd Chapter of Acts. String arrangements by Jimmy Owens. Additional arrangements by Matthew Ward, Michael Omartian, and Kerry Livgren.
‘Night Light’ is a busy, busy album. Virtually every song features those pinpoint 2nd Chapter harmonies, a rock beat for a few bars, a heavily orchestrated passage, a classical interlude, an introspective solo, and lots of lyric repetition. Unfortunately, the songs sound so much alike that they tend to run together.
A lot of love obviously went into ‘Night Light’. The sound is glossy and contemporary, and the lyrics were written to praise the Lord with gladness. But the songwriting – as gifted as Annie Herring and friends are – well, the songwriting is busy to the point of being awkward and reflects little of the radiant charm that emanates from the group in concert.
