New Wine, Vintage ’72

Description

New Wine, Vintage ’72 is the fifth album by the American folk-rock combo God Unlimited, self-released on their own label GU in 1972. The album was engineered by Jack Miller with Tom Belt producing.

Tom Belt and God Unlimited features Betsy Middleton, Mavis Brechan, and Cindy Hofmann on vocals; director Tom Belt on guitar, saxophone, harmonica, and vocals; Jim Dumbauld on guitar and vocals; Steve Dannenbaum on lead guitar and vocals; Robbie Bethancourt on bass, piano, and vocals; and Todd Sorensen on drums, bongos, and vocals.

GOD UNLIMITED is JOY; it is RENEWAL; it is LIFE. The God Unlimited Foundation was formed to encourage young people and to give them opportunity to express the meaning of the Gospel through music and the creative arts. This recording by the God Unlimited Singers, under the direction of Tom Belt, Episcopal Campus Minister, represents the spirit and life of the Foundation’s purpose.

Songs of love, gentleness, and praise speak of life’s hope, man’s dream, and what it means to be human in our modern world. These lyrics from one of the songs, “The Dove” says is clearly:

“The Dove is flying high see him soaring; freedom’s flight begun man adoring. God is in the earth; rising to give birth. Life for you, love for me, let us be.”

After the mildly disappointing Agape Factory, God Unlimited returned in top form for album number five. New Wine Vintage ’72 (the first LP on their own custom label) has more of an emphasis on solo performances, mainly acoustic ballads, fragile and full of magic. Includes a couple gripping somber minor-key tracks («Maybe» and «A Love Song») written and performed by lead guitarist Steve Dannenbaum. «Comin’ Home», «For Jamin», «The Song I Sing» and «Cindy’s Song» are all delicate ballads, while «The Dove», «Summer’s Sunset», «For Sunshine» and «New Wine» softly flow along to gentle acoustic melodies. «Look To The Sun» and the opening «Praise God» provide some of their usual excellent brisk high-energy folk. Eight members at this point in time (four guys, four girls), still looking sufficiently hippie-ish on the back cover photos. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th edition]
