Spectacles

Description

Spectacles is the sophomore album by the American singer and songwriter Jim Gill, released on StarSong Records in 1979, manufactured and distributed by Praise Records. The album was recorded by Brian Tankersley at Rivendell Sound Recorders in Pasadena, Texas; with Bubba Chambers of Hope of Glory fame and Darrell A. Harris producing. Mixed by Paul Mills at Rivendell. The album features friends from the Hope, the band Jim Gill toured with as the opening act and sound man. Also featuring labelmate Tom Autry on keyboards, Sonny Lallerstedt from the Pat Terry Group and Jerry McPherson on guitars, as well as Fletch Wiley.

Somebody get this guy a cup of coffee. Spectacles continues the lunacy with such off-the-wall ditties as «God In The Box Drive Through Blues», «Not Just Another Pretty Face», «Body Building» and «Heir Conditioning», the latter talking about “God’s frozen people”. The Harlem Globetrotters theme, The Byrds, CB radios, ukulele, horses, slide whistle, gunshots, Louis Armstrong and other sundry bizarreness are all gleefully tossed into his always-changing musical brew. Not just a bunch of horsin’ around either, as the more serious-toned «Christianity Today» and title track attest. Kicks up a pretty good Southern rock groove with mean slide guitar on «Suffering For The Lord (Lament Of The Would Be Witness)». Also a country twangin’ cover of Townes Van Zandt’s «No Deal». Hard not to like this guy. [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]

Jim Gill has got to be Christian music’s answer to Leon Redbone. His totally off-the-wall vocals and witty songwriting give him the distinction of being one of the most unusual Christian artists ever. This album is fun, outrageous, humorous and jam-packed with Truth. Gill speaks truly when he says he’s “not just another pretty voice.” [CCM, January 1980]
