Breath of Heaven

Description

Breath of Heaven is an instrumental album by the British saxophonist/flutist David Fitzgerald of Iona fame, released on ICC Records in 2001. Also released in the US in 2005, manufactured under license by Vital Communications and distributed by New Day Christian Distributors. The album was recorded at ICC Studios in Eastbourne, England. Features instrumental versions of both new and traditional tunes, with contributions by Graham Kendrick and Adrian Snell. It’s an ambient instrumental worship album with a Celtic flavour.

A renowned flautist and saxophonist, Fitzgerald has assembled a wish-list of composers and musicians – from Graham Kendrick to John Taverner – and unified the whole lot with careful attention to arrangements and backing. Some tracks have the sweeping synths that typify the Iona sound, others are based on strings, and I’m sure I heard wave-sounds in there too. Nothing jars the ears. I hesitate to call this wallpaper music, because it transcends the implied lack of quality inherent in that phrase, but this is simply the most terrific background music imaginable – soothing without being soporific, undemanding without being shallow. Hand-blocked, artist-coloured wallpaper, the sort that comes at a hundred quid a roll. Superb. [Sue Rann, Cross Rhythms, September 2001]
