Noisy Little Sunbeams

Description

Noisy Little Sunbeams is the cassette-only debut album by the Australian alternative rock band Noisy Little Sunbeams, independently released by the band on Batshed Productions in 1988.

Featuring Tim “Timmy Twosweet” Halse, Dave “Howling Wolf” Moore, and Clive “Rockabilly” Smith on electric guitars, as well as Owen “The Sugarman” Beck on bass and Roscoe White “Captain Goodvibes” on drums. Background vocals provided by “The Rockin’ Rabbetts” – Cathy Eastman and Janelle McEwen.

Wait – you are probably asking – didn’t I get the name of the band and the name of the demo mixed up? Nope. The band was originally Rockin’ Rabbis, and the album was Noisy Little Sunbeams. Benson Records in the U.S. wanted to sign them, something happened and there was a disagreement, and Benson hired studio musicians to put out an album by a “band” called Noisy Little Sunbeams. That album kind of stole the Rockin’ Rabbis sound and songs – but sanitized it in the studio. The results were… mixed. But this demo is better, especially if you like that kind of cheesy alternative that Australia was known for. The first song is basically a full track that tells who played what – except for the lead singer (I guessed his name from the liner notes). They all have nicknames, and some of the names are hard to understand. But I have tried to write what I best heard above. The song starts off with an intro that makes fun of «Sunday Bloody Sunday» by U2 (“this is Sunbeam Bloomin’ Sunbeam!” – but the song sounds nothing like the U2 song. The rest of the songs are quirky, alternative-ish guitar rock. They sometimes seem to evolve a bit into rockabilly here and there as well. You can find a little over half of these songs on Amazon now as well. [Christian Tape Underground, June 6, 2018]
