Noisy Little Sunbeams

The self-titled and sole album by the American alternative rock/rap metal project Noisy Little Sunbeams was released on Benson Music Group in 1992.

The origin of the Sunbeams can be traced back to Aussie native and band leader Dale Bray’s involvement with an earlier punk band called the Rockin’ Rabbis, which released an album titled ‘Noisy Little Sunbeams‘. As in the church school rhyme about being “sunbeams for Jesus,” these fellows do indeed shine for Christ, albeit with a good deal more volume. The belligerent Bray slams home his no holds-barred message with a combination of rap, rock and metal, not unlike Audio Adrenaline. Like Australian rules football (which, to us Yanks, is soccer with no rules), Bray and his cohorts toss their various musical ingredients into a blender and dump the mixture on you like a cooler full of Gatorade.

Bray and guitarist Troy Nilson’s lyrics also assault your senses with no apologies. On «Bad Attitude», the finger-wagging, lead-off track, Bray screams “I got one bad attitude/ You got one serious problem;” «Turn Or Burn» is devoted to condemning Madonna (too easy of a target these days), while «Live Forever» (written with the Newsboys‘ Peter Furler), looks at the consequences of an illicit sexual relationship with surprising compassion. The crunching rock attack, creative sampling and raps with a southern hemisphere accent make this a tuneful hybrid worth checking out. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, March 1993]
