Remember when you were a kid and you thought that strawberry ice cream was the greatest thing that you had ever tasted? Do you remember when, as though to mess-up the expectations of your taste buds, somebody boldly added to your strawberry ice cream vanilla and chocolate along with some chocolate syrup, nuts, and whipped crean? A banana split is always better!
‘A Beautiful Place’ is somewhat like that experience. Veteran Wayne Watson historically provided fans with a solid pop/inspirational sound. Yet with his lates DaySpring release he pours on a few “extras,” creating a musical delicacy to enjoy.
It has been three years since we heard an all new album from Wayne Watson. His 1992 release, ‘How Time Flies’, was a collection of what may have been labeled a recent greatest hits album (along with a couple previously unreleased tunes). ‘A Beautiful Place’ mark a new beginning and a completely different sound for Wayne – well, almost.
For instance, consider this thought: a Wayne Watson song on the CCM rock charts… sounds pretty crazy doesn’t it? Perhaps suggesting the rock charts is going too far, but don’t limit this artist’s work to what you’ve heard before. Take «God in a Box», for example. This is Wayne Watson with an edge! With Dann Huff and Tom Hemby on guitar, Jakie Street on bass, and a thrilling brass contribution, Watson ventures in a musical direction that will probably raise a few eyebrows among those familiar with his work. Others will just kick up their heels and enjoy the ride. «Say What You Say» resembles some jazzy Bryan Duncan influences. Finally, don’t miss the sax parts in «More of You». Enough said – anything more would spoil the treat!
Lest the faithful cry fear they’ve been forgotten, rest assured that the album maintains much of the style that made Watson popular. In the traditional Watson style, song lyrics reflect on the real things of life. The narrative, «A Season in Your Path» thoughtfully contemplates relationships that grow apart: “Sometimes I think about you/ Some old memories make me cry/ Remembering the good times makes me laugh/ But all in all I’m richer for the happy and the sad/ And I’m thankful for a season in your path.” «A Place for You» celebrates the spaciousness of God’s harbor. “It’s a common ground – every soul/ Wants to live and be loved/ And in the sight of heaven’s view/ There’s is a place for you.” Backed by the Nashville String Machine and a rousing horn arrangement, Watson belts out a message of hope and joy. This is a praise song to enjoy by the warmth of a winter’s blazing fireplace or in the majestic glow of a summer’s setting sun.
‘A Beautiful Place’ is thoughtfully assembled in an emotionally logical manner for a complete, delectable experience. The final cut «Say it all Again» rounds out the album in an extremely fulfilling way. For this release, Watson teamed up with Greg Nelson, producer of Wayne’s first album over a decade ago. The chemistry yielded a product that will thrill the Watson faitful and simultaneously broaden his potential listening audience. [Gregory Rumburg, CCM, November 1993]
