Woodpecker Stomp – an instrumental album – is the debut album by the American guitarist and composer Jeff Scheetz, released on Re-Flexx Records in 1990, licensed from Pure Metal and distributed by Spectra Distribution. The album was produced and engineered by Jon Mathias. The title track went on to become the first instrumental ever to break into the Top 10 on the CCM rock chart.
Featuring Jeff Scheetz on guitar, Bill Westfall on keyboards, and a rhythm section consisting of Lance Logan on bass and Kent Burnham on drums.
What is a neo-classical guitar instrumental album? It is the work of an extremely skilled guitarist, trained in classical, rock, and jazz who can not only perform with amazing precision, but also with feeling. The artist also needs to be adept at writing songs with good structure and melody progression. The songs have to go somewhere: ‘Woodpecker Stomp’ is one such piece of work.
It ranges from beautiful, melodic string-bending (like «Lone Wolf» and «Lost Island») to funky jazz-fusion (in «Get Busy») to soft acoustic work (as in «Parker Street»). There’s even an up-tempo adaption of «Amazing Grace» included.
Jeff Scheetz is at a level where he can truly compete with the Johnsons, Vinnie Moores, and Joe Satrianis of the world. He is sponsored by Yamaha guitars, and routinely travels across the country to perform guitar workshops. He writes a guitar column in ‘Heaven’s Metal’, and is putting the finishing touches on an instructional video.
