Description
O Sing to the Lord a New Song, sub-titled A Worship Service in the Jazz Idiom with Rev. John G. Gensel, is an album by the American jazz combo Joe Newman Quintet, released on Fortress in 1967.
John Gensel and Joe Newman had been discussing a way of trying to use jazz in a worship service and got their chance to try it at the Luther League Conference late in 1967. Real jazz here. Much muted trumpet from Newman, a nice guitar from Al Gafa. Add Chris White on bass (bowed and plucked) and Ron Lundberg on drums. All interspersed with a lot of scripture reading from Gensel. Side one is called “Joy and Sadness” and features selections based on Psalm 96, 100, 150, 137 and 51. Some Standard tunes like «Willow Weep For Me» and «Body and Soul» appear here as well as originals. Very good at matching scripture with music and vise versa. Not at all cheesy as you might expect – a genuine attempt to marry the two mediums. And a very unusual piece that has grown on me immensely. A cool sound wave surrounds a photo on the cover with lots of black and white photos and liner on the rear. For real. BF [Ken Scott, The Archivist, 4th Edition]
