The self-titled, official debut album by the American rock band All Together Separate was released on Ardent Records in July 1999, distributed in the US by ForeFront Records through Chordant Distribution Group. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Skidd Mills at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Additional engineering by Jason Latshaw and Pete Matthews. All songs written by the band except …
All Together Separate is Dex Alexander on lead vocals, Andrew Shirley on guitar and vocals; Charles Rumahlewang on bass, and Ben Rayls on drums and percussion.
Very rarely does a group come along with a song that so touches the soul, it leaves the listener moved to the very core of their being. «Paradigm», from All Together Separate’s self-titled debut album, is one such piece. The song begins in a relatively unassuming way, with intricately played passages of understated guitar and vocal accompaniments, allowing the listener’s attention to be focussed upon the poetic nature of the lyrics; gradually building in musical intensity, the song soon explodes into a truly magnificent power ballad. All Together Separate’s album would be worth investing in for this one track alone, if it were not all of such high calibre. The truth of the matter is, this master piece is comprised of an eclectic blend of funk, alternative and soul-tinged rock numbers that captivate and engage the listener into experiencing a variety of differing emotions. Despite such a varied musical reference, bringing together in part such influences as Lenny Kravitz, Extreme and Terrance Trent Derby, Shirley (guitar, vocals), Rayls (drums, percussion), Rumahlewang (bass, piano) and Alexander (vocals) manage to maintain their own distinct sound throughout; resulting in a highly focussed work of art. Without a doubt, All Together Separate’s debut release is truly a tour de force within its field. [Alex Figgis, Cross Rhythms, December 1999]
