We Got Next is the sole album by the American contemporary gospel group Winans Phase 2, released on Myrrh Records in August 1999, a division of Word Entertainment. Also manufactured and distributed by Epic.
This third generation of pop gospel Winans may range in age from 17 to 19, but judging by the craft that went into We Got Next, they’re well on their way to musical maturity.
Marvin Jr., Carvin Jr., Michael Jr. and Juan also get plenty of big-league help from the likes of producer Rodney Jerkins (Brandy, Whitney Houston) and Babyface (who contributes the song «Just for a Day»). Like the elder Winans, these kids excel in pushing creative boundaries to the edge. Perhaps the best example is «Let Him In», an irresistible R&B gumbo of spiraling guitar loops, thick harmonies and tremoloed electric piano. If the vocals (reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson) don’t perk up your ears, then perhaps eday lines like “He’s making love to my heart” will. And much in the manner of Kirk Franklin, «I’m a Winans Too» bursts with first-person pride.
The young men turn in nimble rapping performances, paying tribute to God and family as they promise, “This legacy ain’t through.” There’s little reason to doubt them, though We Got Next does have some less-than-thrilling moments. The cover of the Bee Gees’ «Too Much Heaven» stalls the disc in smooth jazz purgatory, and as a whole, We Got Next seems top-heavy with mid-tempo grooves (all but one of the 11 cuts clocks in between four and five minutes). Then again, most teens would be happy just to master their musical rudiments, let alone create an album this poised, polished and soulful. [Lou Carlozo, CCM, September 1999]
