Description
Plain Water is the sophomore album by the Swedish blues rock band Vatten (“Water”), self-released on Gutta in 1980. Also released in the UK, manufactured and distributed by Plankton Records. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Vatten founder Tomas Ernvik (in co-operation with band members Björn Millton and Danne Gansmoe) at the gutta studio in Gothenburg, Sweden. (Most of the basic tracks were recorded during May 1980 with overdubs and vocals added during September and October. Mixed in November. Mastered by Ray Staff at Trident Studios in London, England.) A live version of “The Dreamer” was featured on the Greenbelt Live soundtrack album released in 1979. All songs written by Tomas Ernvik except “Irving”, an instrumental track co-written with Anders Mossberg (Vatten’s previous bassist).
Featuring Tomas Ernvik on guitar, piano, and lead vocals, backed by a rhythm section consisting of Björn Millton on bass and vocals and Danne Gansmoe on drums and vocals (a.k.a. the rhythm section of Salt).
Don’t let the date fool ya! Authentic second effort from this long-running (since 1970) Swedish trio with Tomas Ernvik on voice, guitar, and piano, Danne Gansmoe on drums and vocals, Bjorn Millton on fretless bass and vocals. A must for the UK electric blues fan – the band captures the right, punchy rhythms of the late Paul Kossoff and Free, the John Mayall shouting vocal style plus throwing in Savoy Brown-type jams all along the way. While Ernvik’s lead playing is softly and wonderfully expressive one moment («Searched») and scorching and ripping the next («Irving»), the “band” concept is very strong with Vatten. Sound wouldn’t work without all the cylinders hitting. Essential listening. [Bob Felberg, The Archivist, 4th edition]
