Description
The Shack (Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture) is a multi-artist soundtrack released on Atlantic Records on February 24, 2017. The soundtrack includes a range of songs crafted specifically to complement the themes of the American motion picture The Shack, an American fantasy drama film, directed by Stuart Hazeldine and written by John Fusco, Andrew Lanham, and Destin Cretton, based on the 2007 novel by William Paul Young. The soundtrack album was produced by Anastasia Brown, Kevin Weaver, and Pete Ganbarg. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard‘s US Christian Albums Chart and No. 6 on the US Soundtrack Albums Chart.
A new duet by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, titled “Keep Your Eyes On Me”, was written and recorded for the film and is featured prominently in the trailer. The track was released digitally on January 27, 2017, as the soundtrack’s first promotional single. This was followed by Dan + Shay’s promotional track, “When I Pray for You”, released on February 3, 2017. Additionally, rock band Skillet released an acoustic version of their song “Stars”, originally from their album Unleashed, along with a music video that was featured in the film’s promotional materials.
The album track by Needtobreathe, “Hard Love (feat. Lauren Daigle)”, won a Dove in the Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year category at the Gospel Music Association’s 48th Annual GMA Dove Awards, held on October 17, 2017.
At long last Paul Young’s Christian bestseller has made it to the big screen! For those not familiar with this outstanding Christian novel, it is a fictional story of the tragic and mysterious disappearance of a small young girl. The title comes from where the main character Mack is asked to come and meet God and find answers to one of the most difficult things anyone of us can ever imagine. I found the film worked exceptionally well, keeping pretty well to the story of the book, and portrayed the Christian faith in a most positive light. I was surprised by the strong country directions this album takes but then country star Tim McGraw plays a role in the film as Willie, the best friend of the leading male character Mack. Artists include Tim and his wife Faith Hill singing «Keep Your Eyes On Me» (which closes the film’s title credits), country group Lady Antebellum, the very popular Dierks Bentley and Brett Eldridge with the appealing «Phone Call To God». The non-country contributors are just as strong. Modern worship maestros Hillsong United are well up to standard and the album closes with a really unusual version of «Amazing Grace» by For King & Country. If you’ve enjoyed the book or now the film, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here. [Dave Brassington, Cross Rhythms, August 2017]
