Description
Sound Vision in Concert is a multi-artist album released on Key Records in 1970 featuring the live performances of British gospel artists like Judy MacKenzie; The Overcomers; Out of Darkness; The Trinity Folk (who’s core members John Pac and Sue McClellan would go on to form Parchment in 1972); Carol, John & Aubrey; Tony Hemmings; and Nigel Goodwin. As well featuring appearances by the following musicians: Nigel Robson piano and backing vocals, Doug Fowler on flute, Graham Kendrick on guitar, Tony Hudson on bass (later of The Mighty Flyers and The Alwyn Wall Band fame), and Tony Taylor on drums (later of Meet Jesus Music fame).
Early Key release featuring live performances of some of the label’s artists. The biggest draw here would have to be the two cuts from London hard-rockers Out Of Darkness: «Closin’ In On Me» (which appeared on their painfully rare LP) and «One Man» where Judy MacKenzie sings lead (the song also appears on her Key debut). Judy has a couple other songs on here as do The Trinity Folk which I think is an early incarnation of Parchment. Their feisty raw brand of folk is in stark contrast to that of Carol, John & Aubrey whose quaint mellow harmonies open side two. Jamaicans The Overcomers display their Caribbean influences on their high-energy performance. Sounding like he crawled off a Monty Python set is the delightful obnoxious Tony Hemmings with some inscrutable nasal-voiced comedy routine called «The Notices». And Nigel Goodwin returns from his appearance on Alive! to recite one of his poems: «God And The Prime Minister». A wonderful snapshot of the 1970 British Jesus music scene. Sound Vision in Concert
When Christians first took up guitars, few knew how far the phenomenon would go or how effective it would be. The desire of many to show their faith in Jesus Christ has simply exploded.
The regular Sound Vision concerts, staged by MGO (Musical Gospel Outreach) have not only been a showcase for such musical ambassadors but also a challenge to many young Christians to get sharing themselves.
Out of Darkness have taken their heavy sound to London’s clubland. Radio and TV have provided a mass outlet for the voice and songs of Judy MacKenzie. Universities and colleges have welcomed her too.
The soul sound of the Overcomers has been in varied situations, including open-air bandstands. And the smooth folk trio Carol, John and Aubrey have also invaded a variety of places, coffee-bars and such. But in a quieter vein.
On the raw folk scene, the Trinity Folk have run their earthy sound to ground in folk clubs and concerts.
On the non-singing front, Nigel Goodwin takes his drama and poetry into student situations and treading slightly in his footsteps is Tony Hemmings with his own pointed brand of humour.
This gathering of varied communicators, recorded live in concert, are just the sparks from a very effective fire. As Judy MacKenzie and Nigel Goodwin take you through this concert we hope that you too will share their very sound vision.
