Description
Gospel Ship is a multi-artist compilation album released on Destiny Records in 1973. The album was recorded by Buddy King at Buddy King Studios in Huntington Beach and by Hank Quinn at United Audio Corp. in Santa Ana, California; with Evan Williams of Harvest Flight fame producing. Gospel Ship was followed up by a sophomore compilation, simply entitled Gospel Ship 2.
Featuring a backing band consisting of Kerry Chester on organ, Gary Cowan on bass, and drummers John Hernandez and Murl Nelson, with Nate Pierson and Judy Barber sitting in on harmonica and harp, respectively.
Decent studio comp of otherwise unavailable songs, five bands, two songs each. Phoenix Sonshine (found here covering LeFevre’s title song) and gospelly folk-singer Lilly (Crozier/Green) both have full-length LPs on this label. The three men that call themselves Shiloh provide country-style folk-rock while the three ladies comprising Good Will Industry contribute a soft folk/pop gem as well as a rocker with a cutting electric lead. That leaves Chuck & Karen (Glenn) for more country folk-rocking, including the talk-sung «Hitch-Hiker Blues». [Ken Scott, The Archivist]
