VIDEO REVIEW: Arise Skates – Andre Walton / Star Song Moving Pictures
Skate videos with advanced skate footage are great – both for the skateboarding enthusiast and the uninitiated alike. They’re a delight for the skater, because the gravity-defying push-the-limit tricks cause the informed viewer to drop his or her mouth and stare in adrenalin-pumped awe. The uninitiated can watch the video and find out why skateboarding is such an exciting spectator sport.
The radical footage shot here features world-class action of several different talented Christian skaters. The four most common skate formates are shown here: ramp; pool; street; and freestyle riding. The ramp riding features some very impressive (bionic) five-to-six foot “aerials” (where the skater rides to the top of the ramp, flies off the edge, turns himself around in the air with one hand on the board, and re-enters the ramp going down). The pool footage shows one skater doing a carve (wide arching turn) in the deep end (of the empty swimming pool) and then doing a “rock and roll” slide over the stairs in the shallow end. The street footage shows skaters “ollie-ing” (making the boards pop up in the air without using their hands) down a flight of stairs or doing a “rail slide” down the stair bannister (ollie-ing up to the height of the bannister, turning the board sideways, and sliding down while balance atop the board). One of the freestyle highlights includes 21 (count ’em) one-footed “360’s” (spinning around on the back set of wheels)!
Unlike its secular counterparts, this video features the testimony of Arise Skates team leader Andre Walton, as well as radical Christian music for its soundtrack. With a mix that skaters love to ride to, Star Song has put together several rap and thrash tunes by artists like SFC, The Crucified, Seventh Angel, and scaterd-few. All the material is very high-energy and available as a separate soundtrack as well. [Doug Van Pelt, CCM, April 1991]
