Description
The Art of Crushin’ is the sole album by the American funk rock/jam band Trump Dawgs, independently released in 2001. The album was recorded by Derek Glavig and band member Kenny Carter (formerly of Waterdeep) at the Salvation Army Church in (Westport) and Ashland Studios in Kansas City, Missouri; and Katie Bear Studios in Olathe, Kansas; with Carter and the band producing. Mixed and mastered by Kenny Carter. All songs written by Kenny Carter except the jam “The Last Straw” instigated by Kenny, Anthony Case and the band with lyrics by Donald Carter, and the jam “Ching-a-Ching” concocted and instigated by Luke Sullivant.
Featuring Kenny Carter on lead vocals and guitar, DJ David Kelly, MC Donald Carter also providing percussion and background vocals, Luke Sullivant on guitar and background vocals, Anthony Case on bass and and background vocals, and Lester Estelle on drums.
The album track “Locomotive” was also included on the multi-artist sampler GrassRoots Music Distribution: Fall 2001 Promotional Sampler released the same year.
Remember the Dan Reed Network? Well this ain’t a million miles from that, which is a good thing, believe me. Melodic funk-rock with attitude, the stall is set out in style with opener «Cold Day», but Trump Dawgs are no one-trick pony. «Whisper» is radio-friendly rock, instrumental «Ching-a-Ching» tips a hat to Fishbone, while «New Song #2» could almost be Smooth’s older brother. There isn’t nearly enough funk-rock around, but this is one example to cherish. Top marks (well, nearly!) for a self-produced masterpiece. [Steve Best, Cross Rhythms, July 2002]
I first met Kenny Carter when he was in the much loved American band Waterdeep which is why he pressed a copy of this into my hand when I last saw him. Always a talented musician with a feel for the groove, this new band combines elements of rock, rap, soul and funk to create a band unafraid to jam and experiment. The result is difficult to easily categorise and puts in a bid for “real” music. «The Last Straw» and «5:11» are the kind of stripped down sounds that suit Prince but it’s the diversity from the opening rocker «Cold Day» through to the gentler closing «Lullaby» that really impresses. For those who crave good old fashioned musicians playing instruments and jamming, this more than cuts it. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, No. 79]
