The Best of The Call

Description

The Best of The Call is a compilation album by the American rock band The Call, released on Warner Resound in 1997, a division of Warner Bros. Records. The album includes songs spanning the group’s career, as well as two new tracks and solo tracks from Michael Been. “All You Hold On To” and “Become America” feature guest musicians Bruce Cockburn on guitar and Jim Keltner on drums.

This is more than just a sentimental collection of songs spanning over a 10 year period of ‘some band’. Instead, this disc acts as a fitting tribute to a group of artists unafraid to remain true to their own unique style of music; simultaneously honing their sound to authentically reflect the subtle cultural shifts in both sound and expression. ‘The Best Of…’ includes excerpts from all six studio albums recorded between 1986 and 1994, as well as two new pieces – featuring Bruce Cockburn on guitars – specifically for the album. Guest appearances include Simple Minds’ Jim Kerr, Bono (U2) and Peter Gabriel. Musically, this album successfully captures a wide range of sound, from the pop/rock era of the ’80s («Everywhere I Go») to the harder edged groove of «Us», lifted from their ’94 opus ‘On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown'(’94). One of the many compelling aspects of this unique collection is Michael Been’s singing. His words embrace the listener, emotionally drawing them into every situation and circumstance as revealed by each song. Whilst spiritually ambiguous to some, Michael’s Christocentric view of a fallen world provokes him to write piercing lyrics which translate life’s many seasons via a medium readily accessible to the masses. Music is indeed a powerful language and one which The Call use objectively; intelligently communicating the truth of life and hope found in Christ Jesus. [Alex Figgis, Cross Rhythms, August 1998]
