START BELIEVIN’ – Steve Camp – Myrrh MSB-6621 – Producer: Morris Stewart – List: 7.98
This album marks the emergence of an excellent singer/songwriter in the contemporary vein. Camp’s lyrics and poetry are steeped in scripture and the melodies carry the message across well. Best cuts include «Bobby», «Under His Love», «Psalm 131» and «Ambassador In Chains». [Cash Box Album Reviews / Gospel, CashBox, Vol. XLII – No. 2 / May 24, 1980]
START BELIEVIN’ – STEVE CAMP – Myrrh MSB 6621 (Word)
Camp’s new Myrrh LP is smoothly polished, offering a readily identifiable A/C sound. His subtly textured vocal style and songwriting abilities are evident. Top cuts are «Under His Love» and «Bobby». [Record World (Gospel Album Picks), March 29, 1980]
Check out Steve on the cover: that scowl, that sweaty brow, pointing that finger, gettin’ down with his bad self. This is Steve’s disco/pop/r&b record, and a fairly slick groove-worthy one at that, with horn section, strings and female backing vocals all getting a piece of the pie. Lots of ballads again, including another co-written with Larry Norman («Under His Love»). Steve would rock out a little more in the ‘80s, but both these records stand as better-than-average CCM.
