Description
For Every Man is the third studio album by the American singer and songwriter Steve Camp, released on Myrrh Records in 1981, a division of Word. The album was recorded by Hank Neuberger at Lower Level Studio and GroundStar Laboratories in Nashville and at The Gold Mine in Brentwood, Tennessee; and as well at Pinebrook Recording Studio in Alexandria, Indiana; and was produced by Keith Thomas with Neuberger co-producing. Mixed by Neuberger at Chicago Recording Company in Chicago, Illinois.
Steve Camp’s ‘For Every Man’ (Myrrh, MSB-6654) is expansive and commercial, single-artist pop. Many of the songs here could qualify as Broadway show tunes, except that they are nearly all directed to a Christian audience and that Camp’s vocals are less strained than, for instance, Barry Manilow’s.
Also fortunately, this album does not fall into the mire of Jesus jargon that dominates much of our vinyl. Nor does it seem to favor one particular musical style over another. It is an interesting pop mixture of country/folk, jazz/rock, and, as before mentioned, a showy, dramatic delivery (which sometimes the lyrics do not demand). Personally, this reviewer prefers the more countrified cuts, but each to his own.
Perhaps the best tune on the album is not directed at the Lord, but at a brother (for, one presumes, sister) in the Lord. «You Just Talk To Me» has a great hook and an easily understood sentiment. Another interesting note: the title cut is very short but is so pretty that it could have stood a bit more repeating.
Best cuts: «Farther & Higher», «Thank You», «Just Talk To Me», «Back in the Furnace», «For Every Man». [Karen Marie Platt, CCM, November 1981]
