Spooky Tuesday – It’ll Never Fly, Orville!

Description

It’ll Never Fly, Orville! is the debut album by the American alternative rock band Spooky Tuesday, released on Brainstorm Artists International in 1995/1996, distributed by Diamante Music Group. The album was recorded and mixed by Gene Eugene of Adam Again fame and Ryan Schyffer at The Green Room in Huntington Beach, California.

Coming from Hawaii, I expect that Spooky Tuesday have never heard Keith Harris and Orville the duck singing “I Wish I Could Fly”. I suppose that both sets of artists are guitar and vocals-based but luckily the similarities stop there! ‘It’ll Never Fly Orville’ reminds me of those great live bands that you come across on sunny Saturday afternoons at festivals whose infectious songs entertain while you sit around on the grass getting sunburnt. The band members are all still young with two in high school and this is reflected in the style and lyrical content of the music. The music is quite loose American indie grunge with good tunes using tried and tested chord progressions and rhythms. Although the lead vocal style is interesting, the voice is unpolished and outclassed by the powerful backing vocalist. Sadly, in common with too many Christian CDs, the mastering of the album is poor. It sounds okay on a portable stereo but there is simply no clarity when played on a quality hi fi. ‘It’ll Never Fly Orville’ lives up to its name – the album is a valiant attempt which never quite gets off the ground!
